When reading through the book, each recommendation had the fingerprints of the Alliance’s social-ecological approach to reduce childhood obesity. And most importantly, their on target framework was recently validated through the Weight of the Nation report, book, and television series. ![]() While the Alliance encourages baby steps, they also recognize all levels of achievement through their success stories and other recognitions. And to my delight, the response to each of my requests from any staff member is always, “absolutely!” With schools across the nation feeling the strain of this economic downturn, this organization has created a system of support at no cost to help all schools establish a culture of wellness. As the health education and wellness administrator for one of the largest school district’s in the U.S., I can emphatically say the quality of the Alliance’s free products/service that I have received from this nonprofit has exceeded my expectations. With their singular focus to turn the tide on childhood obesity, they have assembled an outstanding staff…with a can do attitude. The Alliance for a Healthier Generation is a national organization that is truly making a difference in children’s lives. Healthier Generation Benefit: Bringing together a coalition of major health insurers, employers, and national medical associations to provide healthcare benefits to more than 2.8 million children for the prevention and treatment of childhood obesity, through a network of 56,000 healthcare providers.Ĭommunity Stories 7 Stories from Volunteers, Donors & Supporters Serving as a catalyst for corporations to become part of the childhood obesity solution by working with more than 120 companies to improve their individual and industry-wide business practices to more positively impact our youth. Healthy Out-of-School Time Initiative: Ensuring 5.5 million young people, through 6,300 out-of-school time providers, will have access to healthier foods and increased opportunities for physical activity outside of the school day. Programs: Healthy Schools Program: Building healthier school environments for more than 17 million students by improving physical education, health education, child nutrition, and staff wellness policies and programs in more than 29,000 schools. ![]() Geographic areas served: All 50 states in the U.S. Target demographics: School age children across the countryĭirect beneficiaries per year: more than 20 million children, with a focus on low-income and minority populations who are at increased risk for obesity and other diseases ![]() The CDC published in Preventing Chronic Disease a study, which found that meaningful participation in the Alliance’s Healthy Schools Program is linked to reductions in the prevalence of overweight and obesity among students in high-need schools. Through its online tools, professional development activities, and hands-on technical assistance, the Alliance has been the leading non-governmental organization helping the nation’s schools implement the new federal school nutrition standards. Nutrition standards established by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation’s Healthy Schools Program and the voluntary agreements with food and beverage companies guided the development and adoption of strong federal nutrition standards for school meals and snacks. Total sales of healthier products to participating schools has increased by $130 million, or 71 percent. The Alliance also negotiated agreements with food manufacturers and group purchasing organizations that have made healthier food choices more available and affordable for schools. Results: The Alliance negotiated an agreement with the beverage industry that resulted in a 90% reduction in beverage calories being shipped to the nation’s schools.
